IRB

The Education and Social/Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board (ED/SBS IRB) office is charged with reviewing human subjects research occurring within the social and behavioral sciences, and non-medical health research, including social and behavioral science, genetic research, and non-medical prison research.

The ED/SBS IRB reviews all human research protocols in accordance with federal regulations, state laws, and local and University policies. The IRB is composed of members from various disciplines within the education, social, and behavioral sciences, as well as community members.

Activities Requiring Oversight

Activities requiring oversight need to:

  1. meet the definition of research
  2. meet the definition of a human subject according to federal regulations

Research: A systematic investigation including research development, testing, and evaluation, designed to contribute to generalizable knowledge.

Human Subject: A living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research obtains data through intervention or interaction with the individual OR identifiable private information.
